Under ground there is an 18’ diameter water wheel installed to pump water 120ft (36m) up from the lower levels of the mine. It could pump 55 gallons /min if necessary. The wheel is fed from a water supply above and after operating the wheel it discharges along with the water pumped up from below through the drainage channels out through the mine entrance.  If this pump failed the lower part of the mine would flood.
